In obedience to God’s Word in the year 2005 Rev. Paul Thangiah and Pastor Sheba Thangiah began the Grace Children’s Home. Grace Children’s Home was to provide a ‘home’ for unwanted children, children with no parents or with a single parent struggling to raise them and for children from a low social background. Along with this facility they would receive good education. The children would learn good godly values and discover their worth and God-given abilities in an atmosphere of acceptance and love. This is a home for children to develop and nurture their creativity in a holistic manner.
Grace Children’s Home is situated in Byrathibande, Chikkagubbi. The dorms are spacious, well furnished with bunker beds. Numerous attached bathrooms with western toilets are provided along with hot and cold water showers. A common dining Hall with water purifier is available. There is also some seating outside in a well, maintained garden occasionally used for partying or eating snacks in the evenings.
September 18, 2005 Grace Children’s Home was dedicated in the presence of pastors, friends and the FGAG congregation. On September 23, 2005 the Home began with 5 little children and 8 staff. Mrs Priya Aristotle was the advocate who made sure all the legal procedures were in place while taking the children.
Pre-school began on October 17, 2005. Mrs. Cathy Daniels (missionary from the US along with her husband Rev. Mark Daniels) worked hard on these children from different backgrounds and especially with no knowledge of English. October 10, 2005, two new children from Belgaum, North Karnataka were added to the home.
In the initial days we had different people come and help with the children. We had Bro. and Sis. Hansen from the UK, Gladys, and Luis Mesa and his wife and children from Argentina. They helped from teaching dance and music to even stitching name tags on the children’s Later Bro. and Sis. Joey from the US would visit the home and spend time with the children. On November 15, 2005, two more children joined the home.
God brought in favors that were extended to the home. Such help was given by the Ryan International School, after the founder visited the home and was impressed by the children and the way they conducted themselves she wanted all the children to start attending the school. And in her own words, “they will be our children and their full fees will be paid for all the 45 children till standard 12. This was a huge help and 26 children started getting their education in an international school.
Due to some legal requirement from the Government we had to hand over 34 children to the parents.
Since 2010 all the children are studying in St Eunice English School, Lingarajpuram, Bengaluru. Again in the year 2014 only the girls were permitted for free boarding and education.
In the academic year 2014-15 one girl graduated Secondary School successfully securing 4th Rank in the school by scoring 74% of marks. She has gone back to her parent and is pursuing her studies in one of the top colleges in the city.
Bible study with scriptural lessons are part of Grace home’s curriculum. Further, these children are also encouraged to participate in Church activities and regularly attend Children’s Church on Sundays.
